What’s interesting is that the Russians are using our playbook, but in a digital format. Events like the Arab Spring were a direct result of what we wanted to accomplish in foreign policy. Instead of having to fight the whole Middle East, have the Middle East fight amongst itself. The destabilization of the Middle East with the Iraq and Afghan wars effectively accomplished that and instead of unifying many Muslim countries it caused a deep rift (especially between Sunni and Shia states). What we’re seeing now is a direct picture of that in a massively digital format.
I also feel like the TV show Homeland hit the nail on the head with their most recent season addressing these issues. It’s all fascinating and horrifying. Thanks for a great read and ringing the alarm bell, Caroline.
