Mark, in all honesty, the wars are always rumbling around somewhere in the back of our minds. It doesn’t mean we aren’t adjusted, but that those are memories and potential scars we carry. Sometimes we miss war so we surround ourselves with glimpses of our former brotherhood because of the deep connections we felt while in service. The best advice I can give you is to talk open and with vulnerability to your sons. While you may not have served, the two men I was most vulnerable with about my experiences and who know as much as my veteran friends were those who opened up to me first. As I stated in the article, the gap must be bridged between civilian and soldier and can only happen when we share our experiences in open communication and without judgement.
