Kevin, in short? Yes. There’s a lot more to that answer but I’m writing an entire article entitled The New American Gods that plans to tackle what gods have taken the place of the things we once worshipped. I draw a lot from Neil Gaiman’s book, American Gods. Don’t get me wrong, I think social justice is essential in society, and as an outworking of those who are followers of Jesus (Faith + Works, ya know?). However, many people are doing it for the wrong reasons that boil down to selfishness and a desire to fit in. It’s not out of love or humility, but instead can become a means of pitting ourselves further against those who aren’t like us or think like us, thus becoming the ultimate New American God—outrage. All this to say, you’ll have to wait for a more robust response :)
