jess, from everything I’ve read on Medium and elsewhere it seems like everyone in tech is mainlining Provigil (Modafinil) to stay awake/productive (while also increasing their workaholism) and then creating a culture of absurd drinking practices. That being said, I don’t think it’s just a problem in tech, but many companies as of late. Living in Austin, TX it’s like people decide they have the weekend or a random Wednesday to completely screw up their lives or act ridiculous, but somehow don’t think they have a problem. Every January, I give up alcohol for a month just to reset and fast (I only have a craft beer here and there on weekends anyway), but you would think I decided to grow a third hand out my ass when people ask me why I’m not having a drink or the times when I explain I just don’t want one. At my gym, when I explained I wasn’t drinking during an event that was upcoming, a young woman remarked, “Oh, I just couldn’t give up wine.” I simply responded:
“Anything you can’t give up owns you.”
Andddddd that’s how you can tell who has drinking problems and doesn’t want to admit it, folks. Great, thought-provoking and insightful writing. Thanks for sharing.
