Isn’t this the truth? Another major setback to doing this is that you don’t write. Instead you spend hours revising the same 5 sentences until they’re perfect. Inevitably, an editor will come along and cut those five sentences because they didn’t matter, let alone advance your story.

I like Stephen King’s advice when he said:

“Kill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart, kill your darlings.”

Just like you there’s lines and sentences I love, that just need to get nuked. But the more I re-read them the more I love them. Great point on writing and creating emotional distance. Well thought out article!
