As I read this, I couldn’t help but think of friends I’ve had that have done similar things (in addition to some current ones). You spoke into those very feelings—they’re better when I’m around for support, but extremely toxic at the same time when they have their bad days. Due to mental health issues, suicide ideation is the one thing they latch onto and use to provoke a response. Just like you, the frantic calls only go to show the person cried wolf, but you always wonder about the “what if?” It becomes basic codependency where two people grow sicker together. But is as you said, we must draw healthy boundaries and cannot stay with friends or lovers out of guilt as it’s not love.
